The Serial board gives connection to a RS232 on e.g. a PC. It converts the CMOS levels to TTL. External power supply is necessary. Use 5-12V with any polarity on the input side. The Serial board has as well a 1.25 V output for particles.
If a particle or Spart is plugged into the RS232 connector make sure, than it is turned off and no battery is plugged. The particles with batteries equipped must be turned off. The Particle of Spart is powered through the CONAN connection and needs no additional power. If a Particle or Spart is plugged in the serial board it is running all the time. The power switch is disabled but must be turned off.
